02/12/11: The transport has left Almerimar on time at 4:30am! The first 12 cats are on board. Today we have traveling 31 cats to adoptants and foster homes in Germany: Bugsy & Molly (adopted) were rescued from the garden of a kind Spanish man. He also rescued Pepe, whose friend Sheri was dumped in the garden of an empty apartment and rescued by Miriam. Sisters Tia and Maria were abandoned near Albox and another English man contacted me to help them. Tia’s last 2 kittens Akima and Filou are also on board. Figaro (adopted) was abandoned near Lorca and was headed for the pound when we helped him. James and Lizzie (adopted) are semi-finals rescued by Susan in Cobdar, and Fee (adopted) is another Cobdar cat, abandoned by her English owners.

In Almeria they will be joined by 10 more: Clarence and Flypi (adopted), born in Montse’s cat rescue, and their friends Milos & Juli (adopted), Arturo, and Patri (adopted), 4 lovely kittens rescued from the streets of Almeria. Also on board are Ozzy and Tigger, 2 cats being re-homed because their English families have returned to the UK and Nikita and Matilda two of Montse’s remaining 2010 kittens.

In Los Gallardos the remaining 7 cats going to Katzenherzen will board: Alba, found wandering the streets of Mojacar, Dick (adopted), also being re-homed as his family have returned to the UK, and Maya (adopted) taken to PAWs by a Spanish couple. The last 4 kittens Boris & Button, Nacho and Mischa (adopted) were rescued as a litter near Sorbas.

The final stop is near Murcia to pick up 2 kittens traveling from another cat rescue to their adoptant in Germany.

A big thank you to everyone who has helped these cats in any way, safe journey to them and our drivers Chris and Mick, and good morning to the girls from Katzenherzen who have founds them their homes, and who, with a small army of helpers, will be taking over once the transport gets to Germany.
23/10/11: All the cats arrived well in Germany, AND Briken. Already the first feedback is coming in. A big thankyou to Chris and Kerstin for driving. Chris has also arrived safely at Martina’s for the night!!!

22/10/11 17:45: Briken the dog joined the transport at Jaen and just over an hour ago our last passengers (4 cats from another animal sanctuary), were loaded just north of Valencia. Latest news is that the transport should be 3 hours early in Germany, making the first stop at Bruchsal at 10am. This is good news for all 25 cats and 1 dog. I will be thinking of them, and awaiting further news, but I am much happier that we are now running our own transports and have Chris and Kerstin looking after them this trip.
22/10/11 04:20: Carmen, Maria, Henrietta and Roxy set off in the transport from Almerimar at 4.30am! with Chris and Kerstin. 05:00: Iris, Galahad, Franz, Hutch, Tauschule, Bruxita, and Indiana from Montse, AND Iker, Bibian and Lola from the Alondra’s cat rescue, all joined the transport in Almeria. Next stop near Mojacar!
0700: Marble, Pooh, Tinks, Thomas, Toto, Jack and Otis joined the transport at Los Gallardos. The first 3 are my sponsored cats, and the other 4 are from PAWs Mojacar. I am particularly happy for Otis as he has been in the cattery for over a year, and is now off to a lovely foster home with a garden.

This is the latest (20th October: 3pm) update on the next transport to Germany this weekend. It will be a little different this time as it is the first where one of the German Girls (Kerstin) is flying in to drive back with the cats. There are a number of reasons we want to try this:

- Flights into Malaga are really cheap if booked at the right time
- It allows the Girls to get a look and feel for what we do at this end
- There are more of them so hopefully if a rota can be established nobody does it too often
- As we drive back from Germany on the Monday & Tuesday we don’t have to find people who aren’t working or who are happy to give up a few days work, or alternatively pay people for their time
- It allows us more flexibility on the way back, and means we don’t have to rush back each time.

Also this trip is different as we are transporting a rescued Spanish Galgo from a rescue centre in Jaén to Frankfurt where it has a new home, and are also transporting two cats from Mojacar to the UK as their owners have moved back to live in the UK.

As such is a slightly different route, a stricter timetable, and there are NO large boxes available on this transport.

We will be loading cats as usual in Almerimar and collecting them in Almeria and Los Gallardos on Saturday 22nd, but we must leave Los Gallardos by 7am. we are also picking up four cats in Valencia at Junction 504 of the motorway for another re-homing organisation who are using our transport service for the first time.

Schedule of Pick Ups

Almerimar: Loading 4.00am Depart 4.30am. 4 Cats: Carmen, Maria, Roxy, Henrietta

Almeria: Loading 5am Depart 5.30am. 9 Cats: Iris, Galahad, Franz, Iker, Hutch, Lola & Bibian, Bruxita, Indiana

Los Gallardos: Loading 6.30am Depart 7am. 12 Cats: Rupert & Kya, Jack, Toto, 4 from Angeles, Thomas, Marble, Pooh, Tink, Otis

Jaén: Picking Briken up at 10am

Valencia: Junction 504 picking up 4 cats from Angelas

You can see the completed lists, box details, and position in the van on the Transport Schedule

You can download the box layout in the van here

Schedule for Drive

We will be stopping every three hours as normal to check on the cats and let Briken stretch his legs. We will drive straight through, with a brief stop for a sleep at some stage.

We are dropping cats off at two locations in Germany Bruchsal and Wallau

Jaén to Bruchsal is 2,000km, and including stops should take 26 hours. We will leave Jaén by 10.30am so the ETA at Bruchsal is 1pm.

Will be dropping the remaining cats at Wallau at 3pm

Half an hour to unload the cats and then dropping off Briken at his new home.

Will be staying over night in Wallau so Rupert & Mya get a run around and some food, and we will load up any donations BUT the rear section of the van MUST be left clear for Rupert & Mya and a delivery I am picking up in the UK to bring back to Spain.

Monday we are taking Rupert & Mya to the UK. Is 600km to Calais, so 7 hour drive. Booked on the 1420 Shuttle so departing Wallau at 6.30am.

On the drive back will drop off donated items and returned boxes as relevant at Camping Los Gallardos and Miguels (vet) in Almeria on Wednesday 26th. Time TBC but will be in the afternoon probably between 4pm and 6pm.

As ever will provide regular updates via Twitter so keep an eye on the sidebar or the News Page

26/11/10: This morning 8 more cats set off on the transport to Germany. Carys & Dylan, and Dino & Emely from foster Mum Erika’s are on their way to foster homes.

Florence our boat kitten, Mocha, the first Subway kitten, and Henna and Jags from Sorbas, are all going straight to their adoptants. I wish them all well and await news of their safe arrival. I am less worried that usual as foster Mum Erika is one of the drivers and will be with out cats all the way. However I will still be very happy to know their journey is over, as this is the toughest part of the re-homing process and I know is not nice for the cats.

22/11/10: On Friday the last 2 Subway cats were caught including Levi the little grey and white boy who inspired this project. I genuinely love all cats, but some do steal my heart, and when you see his little face, you will understand!

All these cats are now being fostered near Sorbas by Matt. We have 6 Coyote females, 2 Russian Blue females, Levi, and Mocha the siamese all in foster care, awaiting re-homing. In addition there are 2 larger females that have been sterilised and will be re-homed locally.

This is really too many and we are slightly overloaded, but once we started we decided it was important to rescue all the Subway cats, so that the feeding station could be closed down, before even more cats came.

Of these cats Jessica is still awaiting her operation to remove her badly injured leg, and Mocha is healing well after his suspected dog attack. More on them later.

Here in Almerimar, Lilly had a successful operation on last Monday to remove her mal-formed eye, and Carys was sterilised. She caused us a slight scare by putting on weight, and we were starting to wonder if one of our castrated boys had had a last bid for fatherhood, before his manhood ran out! As it turned out Carys was just a little fat, being quite a lazy snuggle kitten. Funnily a few days of being off her food following her operation seems to have largely given her back her figure!

On the kitten from one of the very tame black and white ones from Mojacar has been adopted locally, and the other 3 are doing well with Liz and will be off to the vet next week to start their vaccinations.

This week I will be taking 5 9-week old kittens, that I will collect from Mojacar PAWs tomorrow, Lilly for her final blood test, my Fleur for her rabies antibody test, and Duke the dog for more vaccinations.

Feedback from Germany continues to be great. Jack and Jill from Mojacar are to be adopted by their foster home in Germany, Aldo has an adoptant and great photos have come through of Fonsi and all the siamese kids in their new homes.

My time in the last week has been mainly emailing and sorting photos for the German homepage and my blog. I am hoping to keep our foster cats here to a minimum now until after Xmas, and overall I definitely have enough to re-home, being responsible for 36 at the last count. This includes 4 gorgeous siam-mix kittens from a small cat rescue near Albox. These will find homes very easily, and don’t ‘bump’ our other kittens, as people who want siamese don’t adopt non-siams.

On Wednesday I will be visiting all the foster kids at Matt’s, and I am looking forward to seeing Levi again. He on the other hand is less than impressed with his new surroundings, being semi-feral! Time and patience is needed, but most of these kittens are non-aggressive and we have high hopes for a happy ending for them all.

12/11/10: FINALLY over the past week we have got 25 cats to Germany. This has eased our strained foster homes considerably, and the great news is that many of our travellers have gone straight to adoptants.

I am now trying to relax after an extremely hectic 2 weeks finalising transport plans and looking after 13 foster cats, most of whom seemed to have a slight stomach bug! This was the result of putting too many kittens together. I had to isolate and medicate all those due to travel, to ensure they were healthy in time. Thanks to my study and Jenny and Iain for helping me, and to Jenny and Jayne for their kind help with the other foster cats. It was greatly appreciated.

In the end Ambarina, Paloma, Clarence, Strolchy and Calista flew to Munich on Thursday 4th with Cony, who flew in from the German organisation to collect them. It was great to meet her. The next day 25 more cats, including Bastet pictured and 6 friends from a small cat rescue in Almeria, enjoyed a car journey to the French border with Chris and Ken, followed by a trip across France and into Germany with Kerstin and Martina. This was our first cat only transport organised by AlStrays, and all went well. I am however hoping that the regular dog transports will be back on soon, as this remains the most cost effective option for us to move cats.

Thankyou to Chris and Ken for the 24 hour drive and good luck in their new lives to their passengers from here and Mojacar: Cyrus, Milo, Misha, Tilly, Marley, Orlando, Asterix, Smokie, Blackie, Lexi, Java, Aldo, Johnny, Frodo, Gypsy, Fonsi, Jack and Jill, AND Bastet and friends from Almeria.

News from Germany is already coming in. All is fine with our cats, and one of the foster boys has already charmed his home into keeping him!

Meanwhile with partner Matt’s help I am continuing to catch the Subway cats. I think the last count was 10 and there are only 2 left including a grey and white kitten who stole my heart, and inspired me to help them. We think he is half Russian blue and the brother of Purdey the beautiful. We have just stopped a population explosion, as virtually of the the Subway kittens and cats caught are female and of breeding age.

One of the Subway cats, Mocha had a narrow escape at the end of last week, when he was attacked by we think a neighbour’s dog whilst enjoying the sun on Matt’s terrace. He needed 3 hours of surgery, but the vet thinks his leg will be fine, and he seems to be recovering well. His adoptant still wants him and I hope he will soon be continuing his convalescence and recovering his confidence in a lovely new home.

This week I have been up to Sorbus to take photos of all the foster cats at Matt’s including 5 new kittens dumped in a box by his gate! This was after dropping Felix and Idefix our last 2 travellers off with a kind German lady, who took them on her flight to Hamburg.

Finally on Thursday, I was back at vet Miguel’s in Almeria for Lilly and Florence’s final injections. Lilly will feature next week. She is the special little girl who was found with only one good eye. She will have an operation to remove her mal-formed eye next week.

Thankfully all my existing foster cats are all passported and ready to travel, so I can concentrate on 4 news baby kittens that I brought back from PAWs Mojacar last week, and on finding foster space for another litter of 5. Meanwhile in a garden on my street I have a semi-feral beautiful kitten, Sammi, her more tame mother and 2 new ginger babies that I have spotted a few times whilst putting out food!

27/10/10: The last week things have continued to be very busy for me, and for Erika who is now looking after 12 foster kittens! I am trying not to take responsibility for too many more cats, as I now have 29 in foster care!

We desperately need to transport some of them to Germany and with the recent changes at the dog protectora, alternative arrangements to their van drive are needed in the short-term. In the last week we have therefore been making plans to drive cats from AlStrays, PAWs and Almeria to the French border, to meet our German girls halfway.

All was arranged for this weekend but we are now waiting to see the latest effects of the strike action in France, as to whether petrol supplies will be a problem driving through France.

We do have Cony flying in from Munich on November 4th, and Kerstin looking at flights for the end of November, but driving is also a must in the next week to 10 days. In the meantime we must hold on, and manage all these foster cats as best we can. Thankyou again to my foster Mums, and especially to those emergency ones (cajoled friends) who don’t normally have cats, and are finding it quite inconvenient. I really appreciate it and hopefully it won’t be for much longer.

Last Thursday I took cats to Miguel’s clinic in Almeria for the first time, since for now he is not working at the protectora. I am very grateful that he is continuing to help us with our cats and kittens. This was a busy morning as we had one little boy for castration, and lots of injections and passports to sort, following the move from the protectora. I am now organised and only have my siam-mix litter, one big cat and one small kitten to take this week. I have never had so many cat passports in one go!!!

Great news this week for character cat Clarence from Mojacar. He has his forever home with a lovely lady in Munich and an older cat for company. He will fly with Cony next week. We also have a lot of interest in the siam-mix litter.

This week I launched the Subway Cat Appeal on Spectrum FM Mojacar, and I am hoping for more sponsors. So far 4 cats from the waste ground near the Subway franchise have been caught. Their details and photos are in my featured post.

On Saturday I went to see Matt, my latest foster Dad, at his home and to meet Mocha, the first Subway kitten that I myself caught. I also met some lovely people who have now sponsored Mocha, and have already sponsored Oliver (another sweet kitten), AND are paying to have stray females neutered. They are the second UK couple who have responsibly helped with the neutering program in the last couple of weeks. I also ended up helping to catch 2 feral females, 1 very pregnant.

Yesterday this week started with another busy day for me, as I had lots of photos to take, edit and send to Germany. Marketing out cats and kittens with great photos and video is still a key part of my work for the strays.

Today I have been moving 2 of the siam boys, Milo and Cyrus, back to Tracy’s for hopefully their last couple of weeks with us, and moving new kitten Florence to try living on a boat as she for now really wants to be an only cat.

I am hoping for a quieter couple of days to catch up, before hopefully taking the 7 cats and one puppy to Miguel’s on Friday for vaccinations.

AND FINALLY a big thank you to Steve Homer of the Image Suite for the time he spent taking portrait photos of the cats at the Mojacar cattery for us on Monday. This one is of Frodo, a kitten origanally from Berja. I hope to bring him and his sister Gypsy back to Almerimar in the next couple of weeks.

Once again, thank you to Pam Roberts and all her helpers for yesterday’s book sale. Another 220€ has been raised to help the stray animals here.
We definitely need money right now, as we are slightly overloaded with abandoned and semi-feral kittens that need help.

Just read this on David’s Blog which doesn’t sound very encouraging:

Roquetas town hall has taken advantage of a renegotiation with the private company that runs its stray animal shelter to cut its budget in half, this year to only €75,000, as part of its 2009 Austerity Budget.

As a result, the management company intends to drop the time it keeps animals from 27 days to only 10 days, before they are put down. The centre will now also charge the public a flat rate of €20 to pick up animals or collect strays. The centre will also slash its opening hours, which means that if the local police or firemen catch an animal they will have to keep them in cages until the shelter opens, sometimes over the weekend.

The manager of the shelter, Miguel Castillo, points out that these cuts are the only way to keep going, and reminds us that each animal costs Roquetas del Mar an average of €70.

He’s also setup a blog where he updates us with pictures of cute animals and news from the shelter.

I tink in the Newe Year we will touch base with Miguel and see what he does.
