Almerimar Strays 2009
As I have been reviewing recently what we have achieved so far this year, and since I started Almerimar Strays, I thought it was a good time for reflection on our work here in Almerimar with the stray cats, and how ALStrays has developed into so much more than my initial plans.
Almerimar Strays has slowly taken up more and more of my time over the …
The Week Ahead – Cats Only Please!
The last week has been another slightly quieter one for Almerimar Strays, for me intentionally because my mother has been here for a holiday. The week to come however already looks a little busier.
On my list is: worming the baby kittens at Nicola’s, liaising with Germany and Jos re. the transport now planned for June 5th, picking up cat boxes that have come back from …
Abandoned v Street Cats
I’ve posted before about how sorry I feel for the abandoned pets, and how vulnerable I think they are out on the streets. This is why I get very frustrated when people tell us not to feed the stray animals here, because they can fend for themselves.
Genuine street cats know how to forage and hunt for food, and they are comfortable out in the wild …
Korky & Phoebe
We now have definite confirmation that Korky and Phoebe were abandoned and are from the same home.
Pam was talking to an English lady on one of the boats last night who actually saw them being pushed out of a car, which then drove off. This was very early one morning. I don’t have the right words for these people, apart from the hope that …
In Praise Of Twitter!
I, like India Knight, the Sunday Times columnist, am now a convert to Twitter! For those who ‘know nothing’ about it, Twitter is an online networking website that allows you to send basically one-line snippets out into the ether about what you are up to, or thinking, at any particular moment.
To begin with I was very skeptical and uninterested in this concept; I didn’t particularly …
Korky & Phoebe Comment
Thank you to Pam for her strong comment below about our latest cat rescue. Having seen the pictures of these beautiful creatures in my last post, I’m sure that you can sympathise with her feelings. I have had conversations many times in the past about why I became involved in helping the stray cats, and it is definitely the abandoned ones that I feel most …
Transport Update
Another good morning for Almerimar Strays. Mary and I went up to see Jos, his vet Miguel and Karin at the dog rescue and managed to get the passports for Tabitha and Charlie sorted, AND Jos finally confirmed that we DO have 3 boxes on the transport for this Saturday, so Bonny and Felix will also be on their way. This is great as I …
Killer Cats
This is actually a very funny article that I read in the UK press. As we all know our furry friends are very good at killing small animals, but maybe we weren’t aware quite how good. Research has now been done, and biologist at Reading university have plans to electronically tag 200 neighbourhood cats!
It is with a heavy heart that I must inform …
A Day In the Life Of …
Life IS pretty hectic at the moment with regard to all the cat stuff, and Chris definitely thinks I’m a little obsessive at times, and that it does tend to take over our lives. Cats can come even before food shopping and definitely before cleaning in our house, but then I was always good at finding something to come before that.
However I’m not …
Stray Cats Update 30/01/09
Ok apologies this has become a 2-week update this time, since I last did a summary on 16/01/09! My rather poor excuse is that is has been a busy 2 weeks for lots of reasons, but I am left wondering where January has gone, and I am even more determined to manage my time better and get more done!
Anyway back to the cats. We currently …
Monster Mog Abandoned?
Looking Like He Deserves His Name
I first mentioned Monster Mog when he turned up in December, and I commented that nature is tough at times, with territorial animals causing problems for some of the more gentle creatures. We gave him his name specifically because he was such an aggressive cat.
First Rescue Of 2009
Yesterday Pam saw a beautiful little Siamese/Persian cross kitten that appeared to have been abandoned, on the rocks with the other stray cats. She said that he was really friendly, was very hungry, rushing from bowl to bowl for food, and appeared to have a bad cold. It seems that our priorities in trying to help the stray cats here will always change, depending …
Nature Is Tough
I got involved with feeding some of the stray cats about 18 months ago, when Pam hurt her knee and needed a stand-in for a couple of weeks. That was when I fell for Saidi our little female cat, and began a 6 month campaign to persuade Chris to let me give her a home, interrupted by her having a litter of kittens! I then …
Credit Crunch Cats?
We’re having a few problems on Callé Alcor where Pam has been feeding stray cats for several years. I joined in there when i adopted the mother of 4 kittens but that is another story. All has been pretty settled for most of the year with our beautiful siamese Monty (now nearly 2), 2 of my Saidi’s kittens still remaining (the other boys have wandered …
Cats In The Port
Thank you to Pam Roberts for these 2 comments that she sent me recently:
I have just done my early morning ‘walk the dog’ and then gone on to feed 3 colonies of stray cats. At the moment there are two lovely all grey kittens and one pure white one – plus an assortment of ther cats behind the Club Nautico – all very hungry …
Cat Feeding Rounds
For the last 2 days, I have been feeding stray cats all over the port, and I have to say that I now have even more admiration for those who do this on a regular basis. I’m very involved with the stray cats but my role is largely finding homes, liaising with Germany and generally organising everything involved with this whole process.
That is all …
